Hypotonic drinks in training and competition

Hypotonic sports drinks are fully absorbed in the small intestine and therefore ideal for rapid rehydration, which is of particular importance during intense and long-lasting physical activities. SPONSER® offers various hypotonic drinks that have been specially developed for athletes. First amongst these are COMPETITION®, ULTRA COMPETITION and LONG ENERGY. COMPETITION® is an acid-free sports drink with a broad mix of carbohydrates with different glycaemic indices and electrolytes. The drink has a low osmolarity and is still hypotonic even at a dosage of 100 g/litre. The acid-free, mildly flavoured formula makes the hypotonic sports drink very well tolerated under physical stress and is easy to digest. Thanks to the electrolytes sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium and chloride, COMPETITION® is an excellent sports drink to support physical performance during high-intensity endurance exercise. LONG ENERGY, is formulated like COMPETITION, but with the addition of protein. It also supplies the body with optimum fluid and energy during prolonged endurance and high-intensity exercise. The addition of hydrolysed protein protects the body’s amino acids stores, which supports regeneration after physical performance.

Hypotonic drink for ultra athletes

ULTRA COMPETITION has been specially developed for the requirements of long-distance and ultra endurance sports. Waxy maize starch and starch hydrolysates from waxy maize (Vitargo®) and rice ensure high energy density with a low glycaemic index and long-lasting energy supply. The insulin response is significantly lower with this drink than with standard carbohydrate mixtures. It helps the body to tolerate carbohydrates to the max during long endurance efforts. Thanks to its neutral flavour, it can be individually adjusted. It's the perfect sports drink for all athletes with fructose malabsorption or intolerance! The formula is completely free from gluten, lactose and free fructose. These nutrients are often poorly tolerated during extended physical exercise under extreme conditions and can therefore limit performance.

FAQs on hypotonic sports drinks, hydration, sweating

If the fluid-electrolyte balance is disturbed to a significant extent, there is a risk of dehydration with serious consequences such as gastric problems, reduced stress tolerance, increased heart rate, reduced heat regulation, lower mental function, poor cognitive function, and negative impact on physical function plus an increased risk of cramps. In addition to the drinking volume, it is essential that the body also receives sufficient electrolytes when replacing fluids, as there is an interaction between water and electrolyte balance.
If you only drink water during a long endurance activity, you run the risk of becoming hyperhydrated. This leads to a dilution of the blood plasma, whereby the kidneys cannot excrete water quickly enough. This could result in life-threatening hyponatraemia due to sodium deficiency. If electrolyte drinks are consumed, there is no risk of hyponatraemia.
With our convenient and free online Sports Drink Advisor tool, athletes can easily choose the right sports drink for their personal goals. Simply select the type of sport, type of exercise, duration of activity and favourite flavour - and you will receive suggestions with recommended sports drinks and possible additives that support your performance.
Fluid loss varies greatly from athlete to athlete. Relevant factors include intensity of exercise, air temperature and humidity, acclimatisation and training status. During training and competitions, the body loses around 0.5 to 1.5 litres of fluid per hour, although values of up to 3 litres have been observed under extreme conditions (e.g. Ironman Hawaii). From a physiological point of view, a water intake of more than 1.3 litres of fluid per hour is barely possible.
Numerous studies have shown that sweat loss varies greatly from person to person. For this reason, it is not advisable to generalise about fluid intake. Personal fluid intake can be determined relatively easily using a weighing technique (body weight before the activity and weight after the activity). The Swiss Sports Nutrition Society's hydration calculator provides a relatively clear protocol for calculating your individual fluid intake.
Electrolytes and especially sodium as an important component of salt influence energy levels, hydration, susceptibility to cramps, heart and brain function and have a preventive effect on hyponatraemia. It is particularly important to adequately replace the salt and sodium lost during longer periods of physical activity in order to prevent a drop in performance. A sweat analysis with our SWEAT DIAGNOSTIC KIT can be an interesting and potentially performance-enhancing tool for competitive athletes. It helps to determine an individually optimised drinking and nutrition strategy.
