Energy bars: high-quality carbohydrates for optimum endurance performance

The intake of carbohydrates is of particular importance during endurance exercise, as they are a fast and efficient source of energy. Carbohydrates are stored in the body as glycogen in the muscles and liver. During intense physical activity, glycogen is converted into glucose, which serves as fuel for the metabolism. As soon as the glycogen stores run out, the body falls back on less efficient energy sources such as fat or even muscle protein: the consequences can be a loss of performance, coordination deficits and even muscle breakdown. Energy bars help athletes to maintain endurance at high intensities or volumes in running, cycling, mountain biking, triathlon, cross-country skiing, etc. They are also the perfect choice for hiking, ski mountaineering, trekking and as high-quality snacks for work and leisure.

Bars in many delicious flavours

In addition to the multi-award-winning High Energy Bar (available in various flavours, fruity, nutty, sweet or salty), the SPONSER range also includes delicious cereal bars such as Cereal Energy Bar and Oat Pack, which are based on oat flakes. There are also various protein bars such as Protein Low Carb Bar, Crunchy Protein, Protein Recovery or Protein 50 without chocolate coating and with 50% protein. Alternatively, the small Energy Balls are an energy-rich, extremely handy sports snack that provide quick energy when energy requirements are high (e.g. Energy Balls Mango provide 381 kcal per 100 g).

FAQs on energy bars, protein bars and snacks for training and activity

All bars that have the word ‘protein’ in their name have a high protein content. Protein Low Carb, Protein Recovery and Crunchy Protein bars contain around 30–36% protein per bar. The frontrunner with 50% protein is Protein 50 Bar, which also contains only 3.3 g of fat and 0.5 g of sugar per bar (50 g) and is rich in fibre. Protein bars are a valuable, practical snack for athletes who want to support their recovery and muscle building but, for practical reasons, cannot prepare a protein shake.
The Swiss manufacturer SPONSER offers a wide range of bars that are also suitable for people with allergies and intolerances. Our Protein Low Carb and Protein Crunchy sports bars are gluten-free, for example. If you are looking for lactose-free energy bars, try the High Energy Salty+Nuts bar, Oat Pack Macadamia+Chufas or the fruity muesli bar called Cereal Energy. Protein Brownie is also lactose-free and vegan.
The SPONSER range includes several vegan bars that are ideal for providing energy during exercise: Oat Pack Macadamia+Chufas is a vegan energy bar made from oatmeal, rich in carbohydrates, based on natural ingredients and containing no unnecessary additives. High Energy Bar Salty+Nuts, Energy Balls Mango and Energy Balls Blueberry also belong to the vegan sports nutrition category.
If you want to give yourself an energy boost with caffeine during exercise, you should try Power Gums Fruit Mix. Many cyclists and cyclists – including world champions and Olympic champions! – use fruit gums or jellies as an alternative to fruit bars or gels. They are extremely compact, provide energy in seconds and also contain activating caffeine (150 mg per pack).
In sub-zero temperatures, it is recommended that you keep the bars close to your body to prevent them from hardening. To be on the safe side, it is best to use Energy Balls. Unlike conventional sports bars, Energy Balls are ideal as an energising snack during winter sports, as they remain pleasantly soft and chewy even when the temperature drops below the freezing point.
Here we recommend the High Energy Bar with its broad mix of pre-gelatinised cereals and carbohydrates, which is available in the flavours Banana, Berry, Apricot-Vanilla and Salty+Nuts. The latter flavour is popular among long-distance and ultra-endurance athletes because the sweet and salty note makes a pleasant change from the commonly sweet tasting products. High Energy Bar Salty+Nuts is also very well tolerated under physical stress. The sports bar, which has often won awards in sports journals, contains 380 kcal per 100 g and provides the body with 7.3 g of protein per 100 g, which also benefits the muscles.
